How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Start Chess Tactics Puzzles by looking at the playing area and its controls. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

One thing to notice as you play

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

The goal to keep in mind

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Making your moves

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Input guidance

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

An example to follow

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Choose a deliberate next step.

Pay attention to this rule

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
